Wamac winners for boy’s tennis

By Alex Coleman @Its_YoPalAl (Newspaper Editor)

With each swish of the racket, with each each carefully timed step, with each carefully thought out moment on the court, a player grows stronger. For months the boys tennis team has been gearing up for the Wamac Conference, putting in hours of hard work in order to try and win their bracket. Maverick Miller and Pete Ward, both juniors, alongside a few of their other teammates accomplished this feat.

Showing up to tennis practice during the week wasn’t enough for these boys to win. “I went to the courts in my free time and would practice my serves. Sometimes I went with friends, but sometimes I would just hit by myself,” said Miller. Putting the extra time in outside of practice and getting better at tennis techniques is what lead these boys to victory.

Though intimidating to some, Ward felt he had Wamac in the bag. “I had my mind set that I was going to win and try my hardest. I really wanted that first place medal and poster,” said Ward.

For Miller this is his second year winning his bracket at Wamac, and for Ward this is his first. Both boys plan on playing again next year to continue competing. “Our coach taught me how to have fun with tennis but still be competitive, so yeah I’ll be playing again next year. I love my team,” said Miller.

Like any other athlete, a good tennis player makes it their goal to be the best. “My favorite part of tennis is meeting people who love the same sport as much as I do,” said Ward. Passion for the game led many of the tennis boys to victory this year, and even more hoping to get that medal during next year’s season.
