Top five moments from the 56th Grammy Awards

Savannah Guyer @SavannahMGuyer [Feature Editor]

5. Miranda Lambert rocking the stage

Country music tends to be an overlooked genre when it comes to award shows, but last night was an exception. Miranda Lambert is one of the more recognized artists in country, and she was definitely the lead representative at the Grammy’s. Her performance was anything but boring, and the entertainment provided by “Little Red Wagon” was unlike anything from any other performers of the night.

4. Katy Perry’s heartwarming performance

Katy P. stunned the audience with belting out her latest single, “By the Grace of God” halfway through the award show. While the power of her vocals were enough to charm anyone to the brink of a few tears, the intensity of the lyrics brought it to a whole other level of emotion. This performance was linked to the problem of domestic violence, and brought to light an awareness of the issue tumbling through our society that is sometimes left ignored.

3. Sam Smith’s winning streak

It’s great to see up-and-coming artist getting the recognition they deserve, and Sam Smith is no exception. The R&B crooner definitely got most of the spotlight with four wins, and with good reason too. Each time the singer made his way to the stage, he made sure to stay humble with every speech. Watching someone so modest receive they attention they have worked so hard to get is a delight.

2. Kanye’s many appearances

It’s been awhile since Kanye has been portrayed in a positive light, especially to the public eye. Last night was a great chance for the artist to convey his softer, more socially-acceptable side, and no one was left disappointed. Kanye started off the evening by debuting one of his newest, more emotional songs, “Only One”, which is rumored to  be written for his daughter North. That’s when the night really kicked off for the star, Kanye spotted latter chatting with the likes of Taylor Swift, the teenage sweetheart he once stole the spotlight from at an award show years ago. Kanye even showed a developed sense of humor, jokingly walking up to the stage when the artist Beck was announced winner of the Album of the Year over Beyoncé. It was a breath of fresh air to see such a usually stoic performer portray an emotional side of himself, and hopefully it isn’t the last time either.

1. Queen Bey, John Legend, and Common grand finale

Civil rights have once again taken center stage in our society. With events such as Ferguson and Eric Garner happening so recently, music has taken a viewpoint towards the prejudice faced. With Beyoncé, John Legend, and Common taking such a stand on their public platform, it will encourage others to do the same, and hopefully lead to a change.
