“Steal My Girl” rolls onto Youtube screens everywhere

Kayla Comried @Kcomried [Co Executive Yearbook Editor]

Many of us know that radio stations are notorious for playing good songs over and over again until they no longer sound like peaceful melodies, but they become as annoying as the alarm awakening us in the morning. It seems like on the way to school or to the grocery store, one can predict the songs that are going to play on the radio. One Direction, a boy band that became popular when they released their first song in 2011, happens to be one specific group that-in the minds of many-falls into this annoying fate. Today, they released their new music video for the song “Steal My Girl”. This song debuted on the radio on October 12th. The music video is funny, and it does follow the trend of their other music videos, but quite frankly, it does not fit the song one bit.

When watching the music video for “Steal My Girl”, it is not hard to crack a smile. Some of the things shown in the video are funny, and the little monkey starring in the film is very cute. Sumo wrestlers are present, and if the song lyrics were not part of the video it wouldn’t be that bad. In the video, the boys look like they are having fun, and they are just messing around which makes it easy for the audience to get involved with what is happening, and it makes it natural for them to laugh along side the cast.

Another thing that makes this video semi-okay is the fact that it goes along with the theme of their other videos. In most of the 1D’s videos, the plot does not necessarily follow that of the song. The majority of their videos involve the five boys having fun, which goes back to the funny factor within the video. They make it really easy for the crowd to become one with their video, and the things in their videos look fun, which hopefully makes people like the song a little more, but their video does not go along with the song at all.

In the song “Steal My Girl”, the boys are telling the story from the viewpoint of a boy dating a girl. Everyone loves the girl because she is beautiful, and all the other typical girl things. Since everyone likes her, the boy in the song is saying he is not going to let anyone steal his girl. Based on what has been explained about the video and the song so far, it is not hard to see that these two things do not go hand in hand. Sumo wrestlers, monkeys, balls of paint, and other crazy things have nothing to do with the lyrics in the song. This could potentially turn watchers in the other direction because it seems unorganized.

Overall, this video gets a 3 out of 5 stars. The humor and continued trend build it up, while the off topic plotline holds it back a little bit.
