The arena is packed with screaming fans, bright colors, and a handful of teams that are battling to end the season with the title of state champions. That’s how the volleyball team ended last season.“They’re wanting to build on the chance they had last year,” Coach Roxanne Paulsen stated.
The team plays its first game of the season on Thursday, September 3rd against Vinton-shellsburg. “I think the team is ready. We’ve been waiting for the first game for a long time,” Caitlyn Smith, sophomore and varsity setter, commented. The coaching staff thinks so as well. “We’ve had a long pre-season. We need to play,” said Paulsen.
The new season brings a new team with different strengths. “We have everyone back in the front row. Offensively we’ll be as strong as any team,” Paulsen boasted. Back row wasn’t as lucky, having a lot of the girls graduate, but there is a whole new group of players with just as much potential ready.
The girls will approach the first game with high goals. “One thing we haven’t done is win a conference championship in a while, and we’d like to go back to the state tournament,” Paulsen noted.
The team is hoping for a lot of support at games. “It would be great to fill the gym,” Smith concluded. Support can make a difference in the spirit of the team while playing, so students should help pack the bleachers at this coming home game.
While Thursday is only the first game of many, the girls are going to try their best to make it back to that arena and finish what they started in the years before.
