History was made January 26, 2017, as Marion High School’s girls’ team was ranked number one in basketball. The team beat Center Point-Urbana, 63-47, giving them the coveted spot as the best. Mia Laube, junior and team captain, shared what it’s like.
“It’s definitely a nice title,” said Laube. Marion hasn’t always been top dog and Laube felt the satisfaction. “I think it really reflects all the work we’ve put in. It’s not only an honor, it’s a challenge to fill our goal.” Laube and the whole team feel more motivated than ever to work hard under the direction of a strong coaching staff.
As champs it’s easy to get a big head, but Laube is humble and remembers how hard it was to get where she is. “I just feel excited, I think it’s cool. In years past we were just excited to be on the rankings board, and then eventually we realized we earned this [title].” This achievement is fantastic for the team and Marion High School, but it’s not Laube’s top priority. “It’s important to remember that rankings mean nothing.”
Marion’s girls basketball team is on the rise as legends, and they’ve earned it. They went to compete at the state level last year, and are favorites to compete again. The number one ranking is just another milestone as a tribute to hard-work and commitment.
