Kelsey scores high with her vocals

By: Casey Burns, Staff Writer

The bell rang and she picks up her books.  Walking down the hall, she begins to hum to herself to her next class.  A couple of her friends join her and they too begin to hum along with her.  The three pass through the cafeteria and in to the choir hallway.  Setting their books down, the sound of the CD player rings in their ears.

Kelsey Smith, junior, has been into music since third grade.  She is in band, choir, Vocal Varietas, speech, the school play, and dance outside of school.

There are a couple different kinds of Vocal Varietas.  “It’s a jazz choir and we have two different groups. One’s the V12, which is mixed, and V8 is the girls group,” Kelsey said. “I’m only in V8,” she added.  There isn’t much difference between the two groups other than one is girls, and they sing different songs.

With different groups, there are different songs that are being sung.  “V8 is singing ‘My favorite things’, ‘Let’s Do It’, and ‘Embraceable You’,” she pronounced.  “V12 is singing ‘Spiderman’, ‘The Look of Love’, and ‘Moon River’,” she continued.  In these songs, they sing in four-part harmony.

Kelsey is also in concert choir.  In that class they do some things before they sing, and than they go right into working on their next pieces to perform.  “We do vocal warm-ups and stretches followed by some sight reading and we sing our songs that we are preparing for our next concert,” she explained.  All of the things that are done are to help improve the sound and make it fun for the whole class.

It’s about that time and the choir looks at the clock. Kelsey silently puts her music away and waits for the bell to ring.  It rings, and the whole class is off to lunch.
