Can students afford to support their school?

Emma Hartman @Steal_Your_Hart [Staff Writer]

With winter sports season and all of the activities in full swing, all students are preparing to tap into their accounts to attend any and all MHS events. Obviously the school needs the funds from these events to bring in revenue to continue supporting each group, but at $5-$10 dollars a spectator, can anyone, especially a student, afford to support their school? An example of the over-priced admission to school events is a show choir competition. The cost to get into most competitions is at least $7. Multiply that by how many member’s there are in a competitor’s family, plus food needed for this all day event, and it is overall too much. This problem is consistent throughout most winter activities

Attending an event like those mentioned before could theoretically cost a family $60. Also, the performances, games, and matches are every other weekend. A schedule like this will have a parent’s pocketbook crying for mercy. Even a typical weekday basketball game or wrestling meet is $5. These events are also conveniently timed right around dinner time. Cha-ching, cha-ching, hope nobody minds concession stand hot dogs and pizza for supper three nights this week.

It is also disappointing that a player cannot even invite their own grandparents to an event without having them have to spend at least $10. It does not sound like a super expensive endeavor, but coming multiple times a season will get pricey.

As a student who loves supporting her friends in all their activities, and is a competitor herself, it would make life easier on the average working teen and families if MHS events were a little less expensive. Even a $2 decrease on student admission, and a maximum “family” admission of $10, as well as more lax rules on bringing snacks to an event would be helpful.
